Comparison Manufacturing and Maintenance Modules

Key module for producing companies. Unite design, engineering and production. This also includes Equipment Management and production chain from components supplying to ready-to-sell products.

Odoo allows to automate manufacturing planning and managing: Production Scheduling, stock replenishment by purchase order auto creating on Minimum Stock rules, or Make-to-Order products starting manufacturing by sales order confirmation.

It is possible to set Bill of Materials (BoM) defining components that are used in manufacturing for each product. At each BoM there is an option to produce several products (by-product function): then specified combination of components gives you two or more residual products and it is done by one operation. There are also manufacturing operations that might be mentioned at BoM.

To take into account production facilities (workers and machines) it can be set up work centers within it's timing for each operation and relative work schedule.

According to Bill of Material Manufacturing Orders (MO) are creating. And as MO got planned Work Orders got created. To determine the sequence of production operations Routings are added to the specification (BoM).

In work orders, it is possible for time tracking, work instructions setting, repair requests creating, and other production tasks operating.

Product description with BoM + Routings -> Manufacturing Orders-> Works Orders-> Work Centers / Equipment and Worker

As a result of the automated product chain, workers get a list of operations that needs to be done with all required links and timing.

One of the useful features here is to set up alternative work centers. For example if there are few workers on different equipment doing the same operations: work orders can be distributed among employees. More over, different productivity and work schedules can be set for different production alternative sites.

There is also subcontract manufacturing feature included. In case of some elements or whole product is supposed to be produced at another company - it needs to set “Subcontracting” type of BoM. Accordingly, deliver raw materials/components to the contractor. And then receive it ready-to use or semi-products.

Reports are an important part of Manufacturing Module as it shows statistics for analysis of productivity and point out uneffective sectors. There are some indicators to check such as -  Overall Equipment Effectiveness, Time Efficiency,Capacity and performance, quality and availability losses.

Equipment that is used in production may be listed in Maintenance. There are some equipment info including Vendor and Model/Brand, Serial Number, Cost and Effective Date, Warranty Expiration. Odoo Maintenance allows to plan the next preventive maintenance, it’s duration and create requests for repairs. Maintenance Requests may apply to a responsible team (group of users) or outsource/vendor supporting companies. It is also possible to schedule regular maintenance activities in the equipment card ( for example, changing the oil in machines). All scheduled actions and requests display at Maintenance Calendar.

Additionally at Odoo Enterprise:
  • Master Production Schedule - table that shows product’s inventory and expenses for specified period including forecast future periods. There is a formula that calculates Available to Promise Products Quantity.

So  Forecasted StockStarting Inventory (Quantity at the stock) - Demand Forecast (Actual Demand) Replenish (Actual Replenishment - orders to buy or to Manufacture)

  • Product Lifecycle Management - allow to make improvements to the product through engineering change orders (ECO). That can be created by sales managers or manufacturing workers as a request for the construction and design department. And these orders are created linked to specified products with it's Bill of Material and production Routing. By applying these changes with ECO, Odoo automatically create a new updated version of BoM and archived the old one.
  • Quality control - allows to do quality checks at inventory stock pickings and to create quality alert by workers during producing operations. Quality team gets that alert and according to the case set corrective or preventive actions or plan vendor meetings date. One of the measures may be to assign a mandatory quality control check for some products receiving from specific vendors. Such item’s checks can also be set for delivery and manufacturing orders randomly, everytime or periodically. Type of control checks can be: to take a picture, pass-fail or to measure (then set a norm length and tolerance).

  • Maintenance and Work Centers connection - allows to select equipment for each work center. Additional equipment tab in Work Center and smart-button's. So it allows to quickly jump to Work center and the other way. In case it needs maintenance it is possible to quickly determine which production area is under prophylactic actions or repairing.
